Joy sweating [暑い], Joy holding hot coffee [熱い], Joy holding a thick book [厚い]
Joy sweating [暑い], Joy holding hot coffee [熱い], Joy holding a thick book [厚い]

“Today is Atsui.” “This coffee is Atsui.” “This book is Atsui.”
They are all pronounced the same, but the Kanji is different! 暑い, 熱い, and 厚い. Can you use them correctly? Let’s check with Joy and Ken!

🗣 Conversation Scene

Joy is at a cafe on a summer day.

Joy
今日は 暑い(あつい) ですね。
このコーヒーも 熱い(あつい) です!

(It is hot today. This coffee is also hot!)
Ken
そうですね。でも、Joyさんが読んでいる本は 厚い(あつい) ですね!
(That’s right. But the book you are reading is “thick”!)

💡 Explanation

The pronunciation is the same, but the meaning depends on the Kanji. Check the opposite word (Antonym) to remember easily!

Point 1: 暑い (Atsui) = Hot Weather

Use this for air temperature (Climate, Room temperature).
Antonym: 寒い (Samui – Cold weather)

  • 夏(なつ)は 暑(あつ)いです。
    (Summer is hot.)
  • 部屋(へや)が 暑(あつ)いので、エアコンをつけます。
(The room is hot, so I will turn on the AC.)

Point 2: 熱い (Atsui) = Hot Object / Feeling

Use this for things you touch (Drinks, Bath, Fire) or feelings (Passion, Fever).
Antonym: 冷たい (Tsumetai – Cold to touch)

  • 熱(あつ)い お茶(ちゃ)を 飲(の)みます。
    (I drink hot green tea.)
  • お風呂(ふろ)が 熱(あつ)すぎます。
    (The bath is too hot.)
  • 彼(かれ)は 教育(きょういく)に 熱(あつ)いです。
(He is passionate about education. [Metaphor])

Point 3: 厚い (Atsui) = Thick

Use this for thickness of flat objects (Books, Paper, Walls, Steaks, Clothes).
Antonym: 薄い (Usui – Thin)

  • あの 辞書(じしょ)は とても 厚(あつ)いです。
    (That dictionary is very thick.)
  • 厚(あつ)い コートを 着(き)ます。
    (I wear a thick coat.)

📊 Comparison Table

Kanji Meaning Opposite (Antonym)
暑い Hot (Weather) 寒い (Samui)
熱い Hot (Touch/Thing) 冷たい (Tsumetai)
厚い Thick 薄い (Usui)

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

❌ Wrong: 今日は 熱い ですね。
(If you write this, it means “Today is passionate” or “Today is hot to the touch”!)

✅ Right: 今日は 暑い ですね。
(For weather, always use 暑い with the “Sun” radical [日].)
