The Difference Between 「〜てみる」と「〜ためす」|Japanese Grammar (N5–N3)

  • Com 0
(Alt Text: Joy testing equipment [Tamesu] vs. Joy trying a cake [Te-miru])
(Joy testing equipment [Tamesu] vs. Joy trying a cake [Te-miru])

“I will test the machine.” (Kikai o tamesu)
“I will try eating this cake.” (Keeki o tabete miru)
Both mean “to try,” but 試す (Tamesu) is serious testing (pass/fail). (Te-miru) is a casual attempt to see what happens. Let’s learn the nuance with Joy and Ken!

🗣 Conversation Scene

Joy is setting up for a school event, and Ken brings snacks.

Joy

(Ken, the mic is acting up. I will “test/verify” the new microphone.)
Ken

(Please do. Let’s take a break. I bought new snacks, so please “try eating” them.)

💡 Explanation

Are you “Testing Performance” or “Trying an Experience”?

Point 1: Tamesu (試す) = To test / Verify

Nuance: Serious / Data / Result
You use this when you want to check the capacity, performance, or truth of something. It often implies a “Pass/Fail” result.

(Test the machine [to see if it works].)
    (Test one’s ability/skill.)

Point 2: ~Te miru (〜てみる) = To give it a try

Nuance: Casual / Experience / Curiosity
You use this when you do something to see what happens or how it feels. It focuses on the experience.

(Try eating the cake [to see if it’s tasty].)
(Try on the shoes [to see if they fit].)
    (Go and see.)

📊 Comparison Table

Word Focus Example
試す (Tamesu) Performance / Quality
(Checking data)
Test a car (brakes/speed)
(Te-miru) Experience / Feeling
(Just doing it)
Test drive a car (for fun)

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

(At a restaurant)

(This sounds like: “I will analyze this dish in a lab.” Are you a health inspector?)

(This implies: “I will taste it to see if I like it.” Much more natural!)
