“Nihon de” vs. “Nihon e”: Travel Contexts in Japanese Explained

  • 29 Aug, 2024

(Alt Text: Joy flying in an airplane [Nihon e] vs. Joy eating sushi in Kyoto [Nihon de])
(Joy flying in an airplane [Nihon e] vs. Joy eating sushi in Kyoto [Nihon de])

“I want to go to Japan.” (Nihon e)
“I want to eat sushi in Japan.” (Nihon de)
When talking about travel plans, mixing up the particles で (de) and へ (e) is one of the most common mistakes for N5 learners. Are you talking about the flight there, or what you will do after you arrive? Let’s clear up the confusion with Joy and Ken!

🗣 Conversation Scene

Joy is checking the homework of a new student from Malaysia in the “Speak Japanese ASAP” course.

Joy
ケンさん、マレーシアの生徒(せいと)さんが「来年(らいねん)、日本で 行きたいです」と書いています。文法はこれでOKですよね?
(Ken, a student from Malaysia wrote: “Next year, Nihon DE ikitai desu (I want to go IN Japan).” The grammar is okay like this, right?)
Ken
おっと、Joyさん!「行く(Go)」の時は「日本へ(Nihon e)」ですよ!
「で」は、日本に到着(とうちゃく)した後に、何かアクションをする時に使います。

(Oops, Joy! When using “Iku (Go)”, it’s “Nihon e (TO Japan)”! You use “de” when performing an action after you have arrived in Japan.)

💡 Explanation

Direction vs. Location of Action

1. 日本へ (Nihon e) = To Japan ✈️

Focus: The Destination (Movement)
The particle へ (e) indicates the direction you are traveling. It is used with motion verbs. (Note: You can also use に (ni) interchangeably here).
Common Verbs: 行く (go), 来る (come), 帰る (return).

  • 来週(らいしゅう)、日本へ 行きます。
(I will go TO Japan next week.)
  • 友達が 日本へ 来ました。
    (My friend came TO Japan.)

2. 日本で (Nihon de) = In / At Japan 🍣

Focus: The Location where an Action happens
The particle で (de) indicates the place where an activity occurs. You are already inside the location, doing something active there.
Common Verbs: 食べる (eat), 買う (buy), 見る (see), 遊ぶ (play/hang out).

  • 日本で お寿司(すし)を 食べたいです。
(I want to eat sushi IN Japan.)
  • 日本で アニメのグッズを 買いました。
(I bought anime merch IN Japan.)

📊 Comparison Table

Particle Meaning Associated Verbs
へ (e) / に (ni) To (Direction/Destination) 行く (go), 来る (come), 帰る (return)
で (de) In / At (Location of Action) 食べる (eat), 買う (buy), 写真を撮る (take photos)

🚧 The Travel Trap!

A very common question: How do I say “I will travel to Japan”?

❌ Wrong: 日本 で 旅行(りょこう)します。
(Nuance: “I am already inside Japan, and I will travel around within the country.”)

✅ Right: 日本 へ 旅行(りょこう)に行きます。
(Nuance: “I will go on a trip TO Japan.” *This is the most natural way to say it when you are currently in another country!*)
